And, as we all know only too well, sometimes it goes very, very wrong, as it did with the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and its Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) software in the Ethiopian
The Max was allowed to fly again in late 2020 after Boeing made changes to the plane, including to MCAS, the flight control system behind the crashes. The company’s chief executive stepped down
After the Lion Air crash, Boeing had insisted the 737 Max is safe because pilots can follow a procedure to switch off the system, called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS.
The report cites an internal Boeing survey conducted in 2016 at the height of the 737 MAX’s certification activities, which “found that 39% of Boeing employees that responded perceived MCAS was added because the Max's larger engines, which are mounted higher and farther forward on the 737's low-swept wings, gave the plane a tendency to tilt too far nose-up in some conditions. Boeing downplayed the significance of MCAS and didn't mention it in airplane manuals. Most pilots didn't know about it. Qantas flight 72 was operated by an A330-300. It left Singapore on October 7, 2008 on a flight to Perth. This airplane had no problem on takeoff as the MAX aircraft did. Instead, it was cruising along at 37,000 feet near the coast of Western Australia when things started to go wrong. This included concealing the very existence of the MCAS system from 737 Max pilots and failing to disclose that a warning signal to alert pilots of problems with critical sensors was inoperable on Boeing's new 737 Max 7 jet is powered by LEAP 1B engines like this one. Lindsey Wasson/Reuters, FILE. Internal messages between two Boeing pilots appear to show the company knew about problems with an automated system in the 737 Max aircraft in 2016, two years before Pierson’s flagship report on the issue, “Boeing 737 MAX – Still Not Fixed,” dated Jan 20, 2021, explains that although the MCAS system may very well have caused both planes to crash, system-wide electrical defects that were never fixed during the manufacturing process may have caused MCAS to behave erratically.
Boeing has been shaken by the crisis over the 737 Max, its best-selling jet, which has been grounded since March and is being investigated by regulators around the world.
According to the Times, this caused the 737 Max test pilot to notice some problems with handling the frankenplane. Boeing's solution was to expand the use of MCAS in order to automatically improve
