Undo it slightly as they crank and then retighten. Repeat until fuel sprays out and then repeat for each injector.

As almost above, starts one I'd also lean towards the alternator as a starting point. As @TomsFocus states above, check the wiring to it as well as the connector/plus can get corroded. The SmartCharge system can push the better part of 18 volts through the battery, so if the sensor/smartcharge cable or connector isn't working properly the alternator could be frying your nice shiny new battery.

Ford Model: 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec. Posted December 12, 2008. Just bought a 2000 1.8 zetec Ford Focus and yesterday I had a problem starting it. The engine cranked over but would not fire (or tried to a tiny bit). We checked the battery voltage and it turned out to be real low (12.2v) so I bought a new battery.

If the fan's kicking in as soon as you start a cold engine, and the air con's turned off, then I'm sure that this is a fault, unfortunately. If the engine's warm when you start it, then the fan might kick in immediately - this is because the coolant heat will be concentrated at the top of the engine - due to lack of pump circulation - which is where the coolant temperature sensor's located.
I'd remove the filter and check it's fuel level. If low fill it up & try to recheck sealing gasket & installation before priming & trying again. Never easy to get one started after it gets air in the system. Again, that's general diesel commentary, IDK what system is on yours - some guessing from the filter/primer/pump info given. NaoG.
