All-alloy American-built Duratec-ST is well-made but complex and crammed a little too snugly into the Mondeo’s engine bay. Terminal failure has killed many ST220s. Servicing is due at 12,500 miles but the V6 Duratec runs on timing chains, which last the life of the engine; if you hear a chain rattling, it often signals the end of the engine
I saw a nice article where it turned out that an ST155 towing an ST220 is still more efficient than an ST220 driving itself 🙂 I toyed with the big ‘un but went with a breathed-on 155 instead

So what do I need to look out for from the ST220, is there anything I should take into consideration before buying one. I'm hoping to pick one up around 50,000 - 80,000 on clock, as I know with my own that these engines will do at least 200,000 if they are looked after properly. Most were ordered, and quite rightly so, in Imperial Blue. Though Ford did offer the ST200 in Stardust Silver, Panther Black and Radiant Red. The Police also had some, in white, of course. Blue was the hue, though. The one to have. An ocean of colour that suits the lines of the Mondeo well.

There will be a big price difference between the two, unless your go for a last of the line ST220 with low ownership, full history and low miles against a early MK4 with big miles on, lack of history and a few owners, one being a better buy/car then the other.
